PVC Wall Panel Calculator — How Many 4x9 Panels Do I Need?

Work out exactly how many 4 ft × 9 ft PVC wall panels your project needs. Enter your wall dimensions below and the calculator does the rest — including trim, waste allowance, and how much offcut you will be left with.

Panel Calculator

Separate each wall with a comma. A standard tub surround is three walls, e.g. 5, 2.5, 2.5. One feature wall is just 12.
Leave at 0 unless an opening is bigger than about 15 sq ft. Small openings rarely save a panel.

How the calculation works

Each full CHILTAN panel is 1220 × 2800 × 3 mm — about 4 ft wide by 9 ft 2 in tall, covering roughly 36 square feet of finished wall.

There are two ways to count, and they do not always agree:

  • By linear width. Panels install vertically, full height, side by side. For any wall under 9 ft 2 in tall you divide each wall's width by 4 ft and round up, then add the walls together. This is how installers actually count, and it is the number this calculator leads with.
  • By area. Total square feet divided by 36. Useful as a sanity check, but it under-counts, because it assumes you can use every offcut somewhere — and on a small job you usually can't.

When the two numbers differ, trust the higher one. That is what you will actually load into your truck.

This is also why the calculator asks for each wall separately rather than one total. Rounding up per wall is the whole point — a 5 ft wall and a 3 ft wall need two panels each, not two panels between them.

Walls taller than 9 ft 2 in

A single panel will not reach the ceiling on a 10-foot wall. You have two options: run a horizontal H-joiner where two panels meet and treat it as a design line, or stop the panelling at a deliberate height and cap it with a J-edge. Both look intentional when planned. Neither looks good when it happens by accident. If your walls are over 9 ft, call us before ordering.

Don't forget trim

Panels alone do not finish a wall. Budget for:

  • H-joiner — hides the seam between two panels. One per vertical seam.
  • J-edge cap — finishes an exposed edge at a doorway, window return, or where panelling stops.
  • Inside / outside corner — one per corner.
  • Adhesive and sealant — silicone at every wet-area joint, no exceptions.

Trim comes in the same 9 ft length as the panels. See our gold and silver trim profiles.

A worked example

A standard alcove tub surround is three walls: one 5 ft back wall and two 2 ft 6 in end walls, all 8 ft tall. Entered as 5, 2.5, 2.5:

  • Back wall: 5 ft ÷ 4 ft = 1.25 → 2 panels
  • Each end wall: 2.5 ft ÷ 4 ft = 0.63 → 1 panel each
  • Total: 4 panels, plus 2 inside corners and 2 J-edge caps

By area that same surround is only 80 sq ft — about 2.2 panels. That gap is exactly why the linear method is the one to use.
